Two Utahns will compete in Dallas

Tag: Outdoor Bamboo Torch DeAnn Hilterbrand, of Salt Lake City, and Karry Edwards, of Sandy, will represent Utah today during the 43rd Pillsbury Bake-off in Dallas, Texas. The two Utah cooks are among 100 finalists in the semiannual competition that has a $1 million grand prize. Tens of thousands of people from across the country entered recipes in five categories, including breakfasts and brunches, pizza creations, entertaining appetizers, Mexican favorites and sweet treats. Hilterbrand will compete in the Mexican favorites with her unique recipe for Chicken Mole Poblano, a mixture of salsa, chipotle and ancho chilies, semisweet chocolate chips and pumpkin pie spice. "I love mole and its complexity of flavors. It's different from regular Mexican food," Hilterbrand said. "Hopefully, the judges will be looking for something different." Edwards is entered in sweet treats with a recipe for jumbo honey-roasted peanut butter sandwich cookies. (See both recipes below.) Edwards, a 44-year-old mother and grandmother, said she entered several recipes in the contest, but she's especially happy the peanut butter cookie was selected. "I like anything that has peanut butter. I'm one of those people who ate a peanut butter sandwich every day for lunch as a kid, and I've never gotten sick of it," she said. "I even put peanut butter on my Recipe category winners will receive $5,000 and a new oven. From the category winners, the $1 million grand prize will be chosen. Winners will be announced Tuesday. The food will be judged based on taste, appearance, creativity and the use of Pillsbury brand products. Both Utah contestants also are eligible for the Jif Peanut Butter Award for using at least 1/4 cup peanut butter. The winner of this award will receive $5,000.
